Dr. Peter Wiklund is a Professor of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He serves as Director of the Bladder Cancer Program for the Mount Sinai Health System and Co-Director of the Center of Excellence for Bladder Cancer at the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center. Before joining Mount Sinai, he was Chair of Urology and Molecular Medicine and Surgery and Professor of Urology at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
Dr. Wiklund is widely recognized for his expertise in robot-assisted cystectomy with a totally intracorporeal neobladder. He pioneered this procedure in 2003 and went on to build the leading cystectomy program at Karolinska Institutet. Over the course of his career, he has performed more than 3,000 robotic surgeries. He also has extensive experience in advanced pelvic oncologic surgery, including complex multi-organ tumor cases involving the bladder, prostate, colorectal organs, ovaries, and uterus.
An invited lecturer around the world, Dr. Wiklund regularly teaches at international courses and master classes in robotic surgery. He has performed live educational surgeries across most European countries, as well as in Asia and South America.
He serves as Chairman of the scientific working group of the European Urology Robotic Section of the European Association of Urology and is an international member of the American Urological Association. He has also chaired numerous international courses focused on bladder and prostate cancer surgery.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Wiklund is an accomplished researcher. He has made important contributions in physiology, pharmacology, and urology, and has coordinated several multi-institutional studies. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed original articles and 30 review papers. He has also edited and contributed to three textbooks on robot-assisted surgery and has written chapters for many textbooks in oncological urology.
Dr. Wiklund has built a career that combines high-level clinical practice with impactful research. He is widely regarded as a role model for young investigators and a dedicated mentor to residents, fellows, and junior faculty. At Karolinska University Hospital, he established a successful international fellowship program in robot-assisted surgery, training urologists from around the world.
