Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
New York, New York
Dr. Blaivas is an internationally recognized urologist with more than 30 years of clinical experience. He serves as Professor of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation for skill, integrity, and genuine compassion for his patients.
His practice covers the full range of urologic care. He treats common lower urinary tract symptoms in both men and women, and he also manages some of the most complex and challenging surgical cases. Many physicians refer to him as a “doctor’s doctor.” Patients and colleagues often seek him out after multiple unsuccessful treatments, viewing him as a trusted last option when other approaches have failed.
Dr. Blaivas is widely respected for his work in routine urologic conditions, including prostate disorders in men, pelvic organ prolapse in women, and urinary incontinence in both sexes. He was one of the early pioneers of urodynamics and helped develop several surgical techniques that are now standard treatments for stress incontinence, urinary fistulas, urethral diverticulum, overactive bladder, and neurogenic bladder. He is also among the few surgeons who regularly perform reconstructive surgery for prolapse and incontinence without using mesh, and he has extensive experience treating complications related to vaginal mesh.
A significant part of his work focuses on complex urologic problems, such as complications from radiation therapy or prostate surgery, as well as failed incontinence and prolapse procedures. He has published some of the largest clinical series in the world on female urethral reconstruction, autologous fascial slings, bladder neck obstruction in women, vesicovaginal fistulas following mesh slings, and reduction cystoplasty.
In addition to his clinical and surgical work, Dr. Blaivas is recognized as a thoughtful leader in the field. He has chaired or served on numerous committees responsible for developing guidelines and standards for stress incontinence in women, benign prostatic hyperplasia in men, nocturia, and lower urinary tract terminology.
