Isuru Jayaratna, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Urology and Urologic Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He cares for patients with a wide range of urologic conditions, with a strong focus on diagnosing and treating cancer. His goal is simple: provide the safest, most effective care tailored to each patient.

Dr. Jayaratna performs endoscopic, robotic, and traditional open surgeries, choosing the approach that best fits the individual case. He treats all major genitourinary cancers, including bladder, kidney, prostate, testicular, adrenal, and penile cancers.

He earned his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and completed his urology residency at the USC Institute of Urology in Los Angeles. During his fellowship in urologic oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, he trained alongside medical and radiation oncologists to build personalized treatment plans. His work there focused on combining clinical biomarkers and advanced imaging to guide decision-making and improve outcomes.

When surgery is needed, Dr. Jayaratna is experienced in complex procedures such as radical cystectomy with neobladder reconstruction, nerve-sparing prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy that preserves healthy kidney tissue, and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testicular cancer. His training at leading centers in robotic surgery allows him to handle technically demanding cases with precision.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Jayaratna is committed to advancing precision medicine in cancer treatment. His research explores how specific genetic mutations contribute to aggressive tumor behavior and cancer spread. He also leads and participates in clinical trials that test targeted therapies for defined patient groups. He is an active member of the American Urological Association and the Society of Urologic Oncology and has presented his research at national meetings.
